The course was organized by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education with the support of the Arab Countries Water Utilities Association (ACWUA).

The workshop was attended by 22 professionals from Montenegro, mainly engineers sourced from local and central authorities, water and wastewater associations, and universities. The course was designed to offer the latest information on wastewater management aiming to promote integral thinking in coastal wastewater management, showcase developments in wastewater collection and treatment, demonstrate the benefits of model-based decision making in the urban wastewater management and promote model-based asset management and optimization.

According to the participants, the workshop succeeded in providing insight on the EU approach and directives on sanitation within the context of coastal zones. Furthermore, participants acquired hands-on experience on specific tools to enhance their ability to respond to challenging conditions especially in the field of sanitation. The exchanged information stirred up interesting discussions, which emphasized the importance of strategic planning. A follow-up workshop on relevant topics was also suggested to provide an extended overview of the matter at hand.
