The highlight of a two-day EU funded sub-regional training on how the transition to a green economy can be financed (Tunis, 1-2 October 2013) was a roundtable session with representatives of public and private banks and green business projects.

The training was organised by the Capacity Building/Mediterranean Environment Programme and altogether 25 trainees from Algerian, Moroccan and Tunisian ministries, business sector, research institutes and civil society attended. The main objective was to educate participants on potential funding sources for clean technologies, eco–innovation and green business in general.

Experts and financing institutions gave presentations on national, regional and international funding instruments, especially relating to energy efficiency. For a more practical learning approach, participants worked in small groups to develop and present green business project ideas, which were then assessed and discussed by representatives of public and private banks. Trainees came up with project proposals in areas such as decentralized solar energy, waste recycling and sustainable agriculture, all of which are extremely important for the Mediterranean.

A strong interest for continued exchange of relevant knowledge among the participating countries developed during the training.  All in all, the learning experience was positively assessed by the trainees. It was coordinated by the Cleaner Production Centre of the Mediterranean (CP/RAC) with the support of the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development (MIO-ESCDE).
