The skills of the mid-career participants were enhanced with the latest developments in the field of wastewater treatment and reuse in coastal areas, with specific focus on novel technologies and approaches. The links with the underpinning EU and Barcelona Convention policy frameworks were also highlighted in this regional training.
Forty one trainees from Albania, Algeria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Turkey benefitted from the course. They were a mix of decision-makers and water managers from water authorities, relevant ministries and municipalities, as well as professionals from the tourism and other industries and young water researchers.
The focus of the training ranged from the role of wastewater characterization in modern wastewater management practice, to the innovative use of seawater in sanitation and other novel technologies, and modeling of wastewater treatment plants. Participant presentations, workshops, and learning by doing exercises were used to make the course more participatory. A full day of site visits to new municipal and industrial wastewater treatment and reuse plants in the Istria region was a unique experience for the trainees and trainers alike.
The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education organized this regional training course in consultation with ACWUA and the UNEP/MAP’s MEDPOL Programme. Read more about the training at: http://h2020.net/en/resources/training-materials/viewcategory/263.html.
