The H2020 Initiative
The "Horizon 2020 Initiative" aims to de-pollute the Mediterranean by the year 2020 by tackling the sources of pollution that account for around 80% of the overall pollution of the Mediterranean Sea: municipal waste, urban waste water and industrial pollution.

The H2020 Pollution Reduction Sub-Group and the MeHSIP-PPIF
Important progress expected during 2012 in the Horizon 2020 investment projects
Support for projects in Lebanon (Al Ghadir) and Tunisia (Lake Bizerte) are well advanced with feasibility studies expected to be completed during the next 6 months. MeHSIP-PPIF has recently started on feasibility study assignments in Egypt (Kafr El Sheikh) and Jordan (Al Ekaider) where important progress is expected during 2012. With all 4 studies now under way, MeHSIP-PPIF will continue its work to develop the project pipeline and identify funding sources for preparation and implementation of new priority investment projects under the Horizon 2020 initiative. The 4th MeHSIP-PPIF Progress Report (Phase II) covering the period July-December 2011 was submitted and is now available on the MeHSIP-PPIF website.

The H2020 Capacity Building Sub Group and the CB/MEP
Horizon 2020 trainees are now 1,500
Implementation of the H2020 Comprehensive Capacity Building Work Programme continued at full throttle and closed at the end of 2011 with around 1,500 decision makers, professionals, NGOs, and other stakeholders from the 14 partner countries having participated in regional, sub-regional and national trainings, workshops and study visits. Joint H2020 CB/MEP and SWIM trainings to take place in 2012
Two Mediterranean ENPI projects, H2020 CB/MEP and SWIM, with capacity building components currently running in the Mediterranean have joined forces and are preparing for regional trainings to take place in 2012 on the interlinkages between integrated water resources management (IWRM) and integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) and on innovative technologies for treated waste water re-use, including aquifer re-charge and sustainable desalination, etc. In December 2011 a joint training on Public Private Partnership in the wastewater sector took place in Amman (Read more here).

The H2020 Review, Monitoring and Research (RMR) Sub Group and the ENPI/SEIS
Outcomes of the ENPI-SEIS Steering Committee Meeting
The second meeting of the ENPI-SEIS Steering Committee (Copenhagen, 24-25 November 2011), gathered more than 50 experts from the partner countries in the South (and the East), as well as representatives from the European Commission, UNEP/MAP and UNECE. (Read more here)
Outline of the ‘pilots’ for reporting on progress in the three H2020 priority areas has been agreed
Following a consultation period after the second H2020 Review, Monitoring and Research (RMR) Sub-Group meeting, held at the EEA premises in March 2011, an outline for the proposed pilots to report on progress in the three H2020 priority areas has been agreed and was further discussed with the countries during the Steering Committee meeting in November 2011. A 'SEIS cookbook’ is under development
A guidance document on SEIS (also called 'SEIS cookbook’) bringing together good practices and examples of developing and implementing Shared Environmental Information System on the country level is currently under preparation, based on the experience and working progress on SEIS in the EEA/Eionet member and cooperating countries.
