The installation and proper functioning of major infrastructures (e.g. sewage treatment plants, sanitary landfills, etc.), substantially reduce pollution that threatens the health of local populations and the good environmental status of the Mediterranean.
Without institutional and individual capacities in place though, such infrastructures are not enough. The knowledge and effective use of tools by the institutions and organisations of the region, represent a long-term investment for the future. Reliable, comparable and shared environmental information to measure and monitor the situation helps all countries move forward in this joint effort, while research results should help inform decision makers to make the right ones.
Actions such as these that are foreseen by Horizon 2020 have a direct impact on the lives of individuals. They improve the quality of life of urban and rural residents, and the overall state of the Mediterranean.
