The ‘Horizon 2020 Initiative’ (2007 - 2020) has been a joint effort to substantially reduce pollution in the Mediterranean by tackling the sources that are said to account for around 80% of the overall pollution of the Mediterranean Sea: municipal solid waste, urban waste water and industrial pollution.
The UfM Environment Task Force that met in Jordan in January 2018 launched the preparations for the formulation of the UfM’s post-2020 environment agenda. The agreed conclusions were further discussed at the 2nd UfM Working Group on Environment and Climate Change that took place in Barcelona on 12-13 November 2018.
The 3rd meeting of the UfM Task Force on Environment brought together on April 9th in Brussels, Belgium, the UfM member countries, UfM Co-Presidencies and the Secretariat of the UfM, UN Environment/MAP and other regional stakeholders and partners.
MeHSIP II has contributed in reducing the most significant sources of pollution in the Mediterranean by providing direct technical advice and support to promoters for the preparation of investment projects in the water and environmental sectors of the Southern Neighbourhood.
The EU funded regional project SWIM-H2020 Support Mechanism is ending by the end of April. It was dedicated to strengthening capacities and awareness on reduced marine pollution and the sustainable use of scarce water resources.
Bringing science and policy in tune and bridging the gap between the scientific community and society at large is very important for efficiency and effectiveness. The H2020 Initiative is committed to develop mechanisms to improve the science–policy/practice interface.

More than 100 capacity building and technical assistance activities will have been completed between February 2016 and April 2019 under the SWIM-H2020 Support Mechanism either regionally, sub-regionally or nationally in Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.
