A sub-regional Horizon 2020 training course on transboundary pollution took place in Zagreb, Croatia on 21-22 October 2011. The two-day training course was organized by the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education and ACWUA with the title “Transboundary pollution- from policy to cooperation” and was attended by 21 participants from Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia and Montenegro. It targeted professional water managers and decision-makers from water authorities, ministries, industries, NGOs and other competent bodies as well as university staff.

This Horizon2020 workshop partnered with the GEF DIKTAS project whose activities aim to improve the management of shared karst groundwater resources (a distinctive feature of Southeast European countries) which are highly vulnerable to pollution.
The course tackled water pollution control at the national and transboundary river basin levels, the different aspects of policy making processes that can be used in water pollution control (such as the Water Framework Directive), but also the technical aspects that enable cooperation over transboundary pollution prevention (data bases, automatic monitoring stations, etc.) and finally actors and drivers for transboundary cooperation and the role of river basin organizations.
